5 Hills I Will Die On About Healing Complex PTSD
From someone who is healing from it and now treats it for a living
Okay, I need to say this out loud somewhere permanent, because I say it in session at least once a day.
I've lived both sides of this work. I was the client whose nervous system absolutely would not cooperate no matter how much insight I racked up. And now I'm the therapist sitting across from people in that exact same spot, watching the same patterns show up week after week like clockwork.
So these five hills? Not negotiable. I didn't get them from a textbook. I got them from being stuck, then spending years helping other people get unstuck too.
1. Trauma lives in the body, full stop
Any treatment that skips the body is, sorry, incomplete. This is the whole foundation and it's the piece that gets left out the most.
You can understand your story inside and out, every root cause, every pattern, every "ohhh that's why I do that", and still flinch when someone raises their voice. That flinch isn't because you didn't understand enough. It's your nervous system doing exactly what it was trained to do, and it needs a body based answer, not a smarter explanation.
That's why breath work, movement, grounding, all the somatic stuff, isn't some bonus add on to "real" therapy. It IS the therapy. Without it you get someone who can explain their trauma like a TED talk and still can't sit in a loud restaurant without their chest caving in.
2. Insight alone will not heal your nervous system
Mine included, learned this one the hard way.
Understanding why you're stuck is the beginning, not the finish line. It's a door, not the destination. And so many brilliant, self aware women are standing at that door for YEARS. They can name their attachment style, list their triggers, trace every symptom back to its origin story, and they're still reacting exactly the same way they did ten years ago.
Knowing why you jump at loud noises does not stop the jumping. Healing means giving your body new experiences, not just new explanations. That takes practice, repetition, and actual time in your body, not just time in your head analyzing it.
3. Healing takes time because it's physiology, not a character flaw
Your system spent years, maybe a whole childhood, learning the world wasn't safe. You think it's going to unlearn that in six sessions? That's like showing up to run a marathon after one week of training and being shocked you're sore.
You wouldn't yell at your legs for hurting after that race, so stop being mad at your nervous system for still being cautious a few months into therapy. The timeline has nothing to do with how hard you're trying or how healed you "should" be by now. It's about how long the original wiring took to set in. Slow is still progress. Comparing your healing to someone else's, or to some made up number of sessions, just piles shame on top of a system that's already exhausted.
4. Getting triggered again does not erase your progress
It means you're alive and your system noticed something real. A trigger firing is not proof therapy failed. It's proof your body is still paying attention, still trying to protect you the only way it knows how.
Progress was never "never get triggered again." That was never realistic and honestly it's a weird goal to chase. What actually matters is how you come back afterward. How fast you settle. Whether you can name what just happened. Whether you're a little gentler with yourself than you were last time. Those are the real wins, and they're way more worth tracking than an impossible fantasy of zero triggers.
5. The one I'll defend the loudest
Every single symptom you hate about yourself started out as protection.
That hypervigilance wearing you out? Kept you safe once. The people pleasing that costs you your own needs? Kept you connected once. The numbness you resent? Kept you functioning once. None of it showed up randomly, and none of it was ever your enemy.
Whatever got you through something deserves a thank you before it gets a recalibration, in that order. Skip the thank you and you're just at war with your own body, and that never actually works. Shame has never once healed anyone, not one single time. Gratitude toward the parts of you that kept you alive, then patient work to update them, that's what actually moves things forward.
None of this is theory to me. It's literally the map that got me out, and it's the same map I hand to the people sitting across from me now. If any of this hit home, send it to the person who needs it in their inbox today.
