The Nervous System Isn’t Broken—It’s Overworked
Do you ever feel like your body is constantly on edge—even when nothing is really wrong?
Maybe it’s racing thoughts, tight shoulders, a fluttering chest. Maybe it’s snapping at your partner or completely shutting down when you’re overwhelmed. You might think, “Why am I like this? What’s wrong with me?”
Here’s the truth: there’s nothing wrong with you. Your nervous system is just doing its job.
When we’ve experienced trauma—whether it’s one event or years of chronic stress—our nervous system can get stuck in survival mode. That means it’s constantly scanning for danger, reacting quickly, and doing its best to keep us safe… even if the danger isn’t there anymore.
This survival mode shows up in different ways:
- Fight: irritability, anger, defensiveness.
- Flight: anxiety, overthinking, perfectionism.
- Freeze: numbness, fatigue, procrastination.
- Fawn: people-pleasing, avoiding conflict, caretaking.
It can feel like you’re “too sensitive” or like your reactions are out of proportion. But from your nervous system’s perspective, they make perfect sense.
The problem isn’t that you’re broken—it’s that your body never got the chance to feel safe enough to rest.
That’s where somatic therapy and EMDR come in. These approaches don’t just talk *about* your experiences—they help your body *process* them.
Somatic Experiencing helps you complete incomplete stress responses—like the urge to run, cry, or freeze that got trapped in your body. EMDR helps the brain reprocess overwhelming memories so they lose their emotional charge.
As you work with your nervous system, something shifts. You start to feel more grounded. Less reactive. More present. You sleep better. You breathe easier. You trust yourself more.
This work isn’t about forcing calm or thinking happy thoughts. It’s about helping your body remember what safety feels like.
If you’re tired of living in constant survival mode, there’s a different way. You can feel safe. You can come home to your body. And you don’t have to do it alone.
Curious what that could look like?
At Revive Therapy Services, we specialize in trauma therapy that goes beyond traditional talk therapy. In Philadelphia, PA we offer online and in person:
EMDR Therapy: Helps your brain reprocess stuck memories, core beliefs, and emotional patterns that live beneath the surface of your thoughts.
Somatic Experiencing: A body-based approach that helps you build tolerance for sensation and create safety within your nervous system, at a pace that respects your capacity.
IFS (Internal Family Systems Therapy): A compassionate, evidence-based approach that helps you explore and heal the different “parts” of yourself—like the inner critic, the people-pleaser, or the wounded child. Instead of trying to get rid of these parts, IFS helps you understand them, build inner harmony, and reconnect with your core Self—the calm, confident center within you that can lead the healing process.
